The Rescue Plan – an excerpt

JUST BROWSING is a dating story I’ve been writing for a while, but one that I never quite know what to do with. I think it’s time it sees the light, though. I started publishing it as a series a couple of years back, but didn’t like where it was going. That’s why I’ve decided that I’ll publish it as just another short story instead. Below is an excerpt, with tentative character names. If it sounds like something you’d read, check back for more — plus publishing dates! 😉

The Rescue Plan / Just Browsing

“I’ve been looking for you all morning! You missed Media class.”
“No sh*t.”
“You alright? D’you see my texts?”
“Sorry,” Meena mumbled. “I woke up late, I’ve a raging headache, haven’t even looked at my phone…just not having a good morning.”
Gera made a full stop as they walked back down to the first floor. “Hold up… Don’t tell me there’s trouble in paradise.”
“Ugh, you’re not helping,” says Meena, taking a hand to her head. “And you just reminded me I forgot to call him, again.”
“OK? Sorry, but what’s with the sunglasses indoor then, weirdo? For a second there I thought you’ve been crying.”
“Well, if you must know, I was up all night.” Slowly, Meena turned just her head to face Gera, lowering her sunglasses. “Doesn’t it show?”
“Honestly? Yes. But nothing a little concealer won't help.”
“I need coffee, is what I need.”
“Why were you up all night anyway?”
They headed to the cafeteria. There they sat down and caught up on the details Gera couldn't wait to hear about: Meena’s sleepless night.
“Dude, why didn’t you tell me that sh*t was so addictive.”
“Didn't I tell you?!” said Gera, a satisfied smirk on her face. “So that means you have a date coming up?”
Meena sighed. “Three.”
“Wait, what?”

Developing Blurb (for context): An introverted and insecure college student uses her spare time to “research” and explore the obscure world of online dating. After gaining enough confidence, she puts her findings to the test.
