I will talk a big game in person, on social media, or wherever I feel my opinion is needed. But I don’t always bring up politics to this, my sanctuary — where I conduct my own therapy sessions through poetry, retrospective anecdotes, and storytelling. However, there comes a time when it is most necessary.
Even after being bullied and harassed for speaking out, once upon a time, I still talk my sh—t on my site when I have to. Real quick backstory on that before I go on with what I wanted to say. Back in 2009-ish I created a poetry blog that quickly evolved into something other ramblings. Twitter was just getting started with its unhingedness and there were constant debates with randoms all the time. (Not much has changed.) I forget what major event happened around that time, perhaps another shooting, that got everybody talking about gun control.
Well, I saw an opportunity to give my opinion on that platform, and I took it. During that time, I had just started showing interest in some political topics and social issues. I wasn’t as well-informed as I am today to be debating anyone, to be honest, but I’ve always taken risks with my voice. Gun control has always been one of those subjects of interest to me due to the unbelievable fact that mass-shootings keep happening in The US, and there are still very little to no changes in our gun laws. So that’s what I tweeted (and blogged) about: banning assault weapons.
Long story short, I was quickly ambushed by a mob of angry Second Amendment worshipers who haven’t got the first clue about what a “well regulated Militia” means in modern times, nor that those laws were written in the 1700s, before semi-automatic rifles. Besides, 1700s? Need I say more?
I was harassed mercilessly by these people for days, weeks maybe, on my own blog. It’s safe to conclude now that those people probably were MAGA Republicans in the making. But ever since that experience, I’ve been more careful about what energy I want to attract to my blog and I’ve made sure that I know and support every point that I want to talk about — which is why I wanted to write a bit about Kamala Harris now running for president. (?!)
When Hillary was running, many found her “unlikeable” so they would say things like, “Oh, you’re just voting for her because she’s a woman.” Now, with Kamala, I’m bracing myself for the same comments. First of all, if that were the case, I would have jumped onboard for Sarah Palin back in the 2008 presidential race. But no way. I would only give my vote to a woman I perceive as well-intentioned, competent, and just all-around a right fit to run a country like the United States. This is not about “rooting for the same team.”
Secondly, it just so happens that every time a woman has run for president she’s running against the biggest threat to our civilized society: The twice-impeached, 34 times guilty Convicted Orange Felon himself. I mean, is this excuse for a human ever going to go away? If he continues to run and his opponent is a woman, then hell yes, I will most definitely vote for the woman. A woman running against him will have better intentions, I’m sure. Anyone opposing him, in fact, will have better intentions for the country.
Just look at his policies? Why go after women’s reproductive rights? Why do MAGA Republicans hate women so much? Every other reference coming out of their mouths regarding women is repulsive. We’re miserable “childless cat ladies” or “nasty women” or “deranged” “crazy” “witches.” The list goes on…
Wasn’t it a woman who gave birth to these men? And, how are women of the 21st century marrying such men? I am disgusted. So, no, I will not stand for any of these small men running this country again. The time to rally behind Kamala and save the country from that cancer is now.
To those people who “aren’t into politics” at all, I’ll say this: as someone on the Internet said, it’s OK if you don’t do politics; just know that politics will do you regardless. So might as well pick a side and use your voice.
I’m not heavy on politics either, as a matter of fact. But I’ll say what I need to say now and then. I like to stay informed about who runs my city, the State, the country, the world…who wants to regulate my body and who doesn’t, and then make some noise accordingly if I have to. When the stakes are this high, there is no time to play cute, coy, and quiet.
I do get excited about the fact that a woman is running again, but not because “she’s a woman” — it’s a historic moment considering our history of being oppressed in this country and, heck, in life! Just look at what’s written on the Bible about us… Well, don’t get me started on religion.
Going back to the giving your vote to a woman, we’ve witnessed over these years what a highly competent, knowledgeable, and caring a woman Kamala is, so it’s not just any woman we’re voting for here either. Do your own research.
And just for the record, I’m good being a “childless cat lady.” Also, I’d probably vote for anything over that egotistic wicked convicted felon again.
