Ants and my sense of wonder
When I was a little girl, I would spend minutes on end watching hard-working ants in their element. More specifically, I’d watch fire ants go in and out of their expertly-designed colonies and nests in my family’s or neighbors’ backyard. I was merely in awe of how ants walked back and forth, what seemed like aimlessly, to and from a hole somewhere in soil. But what I was more fascinated by was how even after chasing them, I’d still lose track of where they went, where they were going to or coming from. Their hideout must’ve been an infinite tunnel to the bottom of the earth, I thought. One hundred…

Age in The Time of Experts
So much has been said about age, yet so little should. Everyone seems to know what is best for other people at every stage of their life; from what to wear to who to be. Can you imagine what that’s like? Oh, wait, you can because we all see it every day — on TV, social media, in real life! I’ve always had a strong opinion about this aging thing because I’ve had to hear opinions about how or when to “act your age” from people very close to me since I was a very young girl. I’m talking about my own mom. In our Latino culture, especially in my…

Flowers and Relationships
While taking care of my bouquet of roses the other day, I started thinking about the relationship between flowers and, well, relationships. Although not groundbreaking, it is a symbol worth noting and remembering whenever we find ourselves wondering what went wrong. Like flowers, relationships are susceptible to withering. Some, you will find, quicker than others. The thing is, when you take that extra care of your flowers — adding the chemical solution in the water to keep them fresh, changing the water every now and then (or watering them if a garden), keeping them cool, etc. — the flowers naturally will last longer. You’re investing quality time on them and…

Staying Sane in Corona Times
It must’ve happened over a thousand times before Coronavirus. I was the victim of some ghosting and a little too much “left-on-seen” by average people I lowered my standards for. But, isn’t it life? La vie… ¡la vida! Then, it graduated from being a reasonably demanding person to life actually pressing down on me, and all of a sudden, I had bigger fish to fry. And that’s when I remembered that some things in life are reeeeally insignificant in our lifetime. The COVID-19 era has left us in a complete state of stupefaction. Most of us can’t even seem to come to terms with this situation or find a medium.…

Best Kept Secret
An ounce of care would be nice from them you shower with awes, allow to eat your bread, take up unearned space in your shed Who knew flesh and bones could hurt so and leave you at the mercy of time that never seems to change a thing no matter how much of it’s passed Rising from my tomb at dawn to grant wishes and put out fires unconditionally since reciprocity is a rare little thing to be found in their soul Frustrated by my own weakness that gives me dark circles, ties up my gut, betrays my ego and cancels out my worth at times I need it the…
