A better world: sometime this lifetime
Sit back, relax, drink your bourbon. Not a care in the world. Their kids aren’t safe, but yours are. Why should you care, right? You could not imagine your life without your family by your side, but when it happens to others, you turn your back. You can’t conceive the idea that others might want and deserve to be as happy as you, a happiness pursuit that you think you’re entitled to because by some superiority complex you have convinced yourself that this world is yours. You went and had that abortion in ’09. It saved your career, your relationship, your life. Women around the country, as well as your…

Homeless is a person in your life
I went for a walk around the block with my friend who was visiting from out of State. “Wow, I haven’t seen a single homeless person in your neighborhood,” she said. “Do you ever see homeless people?” she asked. I might’ve stuttered in my response because my definition of homeless had recently been updated. The question took me back to past years, circumstances, and people. I have known people who would probably not be considered “homeless” under US aid programs, but who have been homeless nonetheless. So, while I understood she was referring to the street-living kind of homeless, I could not say without stumbling that I barely saw homeless…

Don’t Hit the Brakes!
Today, I want to share my little blogging space with the writing community, and any creatives reading this. Sometimes I think about how much different things could have potentially been for me if only I had had the right guidance. I’ve been open about how college failed me in that area; how I trusted a system which priority, I now know, is to make the most money they can out of each student, with your academic ambitions coming last. But that’s a whole other blog post (stay tuned for that!). So I wanted to send a reminder to aspiring writers out there to just DO it. This is not a…

The Crumbs They Call Affection
I ask myself today what’s changed? Heart beating with the same ache, People I’ve loved so long can’t reciprocate, And I settled for crumbs they call affection Given all my attention, dealt with their rejection; I understand it was f—ked up, in retrospection. Today I tried to numb the pain again, day by day, But how long ‘til I no longer feel this way? Heaven knows I tried, from the Milky Way and back Years have passed, but I keep falling into the crack And it’s here I stay, unsure if it’s in my brain Or if the efforts’ been all in vain, And it’s just a no-destination train. My…

Hope: Triumph in Defeat
Today’s blog is not a poem or a story. It’s not a complaint nor is it a book promo; it’s just…some words of hope. With all that is always going on in the world and all the negativity and darkness that circulate on social networks minute by minute, it’s always nice to see a glimpse of light. It’s also nice, for good mental health’s sake, to know when to step away from the interwebs! I know people who feel some type of way about motivational speeches and the blah blah blah… Believe me, I’m too much of a realist (and a bit of a cynic if you will) to buy…

A Teacher is that Person
A caring teacher is someone who goes out of her way to earn your trust and to get to know your emotional needs as much as your academic needs, in order to better help you. A kind teacher greets you every morning like she hasn’t seen you in a week. Her hugs can be so warm you’ll realize it’s not just a school but also your safe haven. A good teacher thinks of you and of ways in which she can help you even when not teaching you — when reading the news, when shopping for food, when a kids movie comes up, when the radio plays a song you…

Tales of a Friendzoned Night of Champagne
“Here’s to a fun night!” she raises her glass. But the only thing he raises in response is an eyebrow. Studying the bottle now planted on the table, he tightens his lips, holding back a laugh. “What’s the matter?” she asks. “You wanna walk around with that?” Puzzled, she glances at the bottle and right back at him. “It’s legal…” “Cheap champagne? It should be illegal.” “Your vodka isn’t all that either,” she refutes his disapproval. “Not like we’re finishing the whole bottle anyway… I knew we’d prob’ly get too drunk to appreciate the good sh—t.” “Let’s just finish it up before we get to the park.” “God, you’re such…

Heart Disease You Can’t See
She couldn’t understand how, if Earth spun on its axis twenty-four seven and each full turn was a different day, her heart didn’t change. What on Earth, the stubbornness. Two thousand four hundred days it’d been, she learned the definition of eternity. A grueling and petrifying feeling, like looking at a ghost and holding your breath until it goes away, instead of running from it. It was no way of living, feeling that way. Why couldn’t she escape that constant state of ache? Heart disease is failure of the heart’s muscles, but what about the profound heavy emotions? It’s an incurable disease to be unable to breathe or control your…

Road Rage Saved the Day
It was a four-way intersection. He honked at her as she sped up to turn right. In an unexpected move, he turned left and was then driving behind her. That’s when she rolled down her window, stuck out her hand and gave him the finger. She watched his face in her rear view mirror hoping to get some sort of reaction out of him, but his face was as serious as The Queen’s Guard’s. “Idiot,” she murmured. After a couple of turns, his car was no longer in sight. But five minutes later, they both pulled up into the same parking lot of a convenience store. “Oh for crying out…
