• Friends Now Gone Later

So much has been said about friendships, through personal anecdotes, quotes, proverbs, and entire books, that you think you know what a “real friend” should be and should act like. Some of those stories hold truth today, but I think it is something that you eventually learn on your own. Who is a friend? It’s funny how sometimes you befriend people in your childhood and, because you grew up with them, you think you owe one another loyalty and that your friendship is meant to be. But, sometimes, those people who watched you grow and were perhaps the first ones to learn all about your inclinations — your style, taste,…

  • The Quiet Therapists Within

Who’s the therapist in your life? Or are you that someone? You know, that person who, whether their profession or not, has the spine, the mind, and the guts and that swag that screams, “so what?”— do it and do it twice. And they’re classy enough to be your trusty go-to when the going gets hard. Well, here we are. Interestingly enough, we don’t see dark but light. Every terrible turn or outcome is a sign; an opportunity to retract and restart. Doesn’t mean inside we aren’t cracking and seeing stars from the swings life takes at us, often straight to the heart. But we know better not to trust…

  • The Ones Who Stay, The Ones Who Go Away

There are friends who want you to stay Friends who want you away Friends in distress Friends in happiness Friends from childhood Friends you just met There are friends who show up Friends who give up Friends who go the extra mile Friends who won’t walk down one aisle Friends you can sin with Friends to go to church with There are friends who believe in you Friends who doubt you Friends who call to check on you Friends who call to get something from you Friends who listen when you talk Friends who only do the talk There are friends you can get wild with Friends you can only…

  • Your Secret is Safe with Me (But We All Know)

How many haven’t heard a friend say those words before; in person, over the phone…while on speakerphone? I’ve learned the hard way that the best kept secret is that which never leaves your big mouth. It is extremely likely that your BFF is not my BFF, and if I trust you, it is because you’ve passed the years-long arduous trustworthiness test, and I fully expect you to abide by these unwritten rules of confidentiality. Unfortunately, not everyone will care as much as you about your own privacy. Some people just can’t keep a secret, but we will never find out until the secret is out. It has to happen…

    It Is What It Is

Those were the heart wrenching last words a friend dying of brain cancer said to me. It wasn’t our whole conversation, but those words — words of complete abandonment, acceptance, resignation — are the ones that stuck with me. He was a young man, a son, a brother, a friend…a bartender. On his last days, I found myself laughing in his mom’s kitchen as he showed me his mixology techniques. “Come with me,” he said. “Let me make you a drink.” And so I followed him to the kitchen. His movements slow; his words a slur, after a stroke paralyzed a side of his body. Still, he insisted in fixing…

  • Everlasting Memories

Memories are everything. I don’t think I appreciated the memories of the good times I’ve had with my loved ones as much as I do today. They’re everything to me. When I think about it, I just want to re-live those moments. Sometimes, I’m lying in bed, dead tired and ready to pass out, when suddenly I burst out laughing. And I mean laughing my ass off (alone) as if I were there again. I know; it makes me sound like a crazy woman. But I’m having a lot of flashbacks as of lately—makes me wonder if life is trying to tell me something—and if there’s ever any doubt from…

  • Despite it All

Despite your insensitivity, Despite your blatant pride, Despite your disregard for people’s feelings, Despite your incapability to admit your faults, Despite your genuine belief that to you the world should bow, Despite the backstabbing, Despite it all, I think of you today and I miss us.
